Spring Lawn Care

Spring Lawn Care

Green is glorious and good spring lawn care maintenance is the key to achieving a healthy and great-looking lawn. Spring time is an important time for lawn maintenance as it is the official start to the lawn and gardening season. If you need help with spring lawn care for your home, simply find a professional, reliable landscaper to help you.

1. Clear Out Debris

There were many opportunities during the winter months for debris to fall on your grass. Removing any debris from your yard is the first step in spring lawn care. Clearing off debris also includes raking any leaves that have managed to collect on the lawn. Other common debris that should be cleared include fallen branches, old clippings and evergreen needles. Any other debris should be removed as well.

2. Spread the Snow Around

There are often areas on the lawn which tend to pile up with snow during the winter months. This is common in shady areas and areas where snow is intentionally piled. With warmer spring temperatures, the snow begins to melt – but it tends to remain in these areas. As a result, the grass under the snow may not develop. All you need to do to prevent this is to shovel and spread the snow around evenly so that it can melt away.

3. Fertilize—But Not Too Much!

Fertilizing should be done all year round, except for months where there may be thick snow on your lawn. So when it comes time to fertilize in the spring, make sure you don’t over-fertilize. Keep in mind that over-fertilizing can make the top growth on the lawn look great but at the same time harm the roots and create more damage than beauty.

4. Get Rid of Crabgrass

The use of an herbicide will help get rid of any crabgrass in your lawn. If your lawn had crabgrass last spring and summer then you will need to treat it this spring with a pre-emergence herbicide. Timing is everything with this type of application, as it must be completed about two weeks before crabgrass germinates in your area. It’s a little tricky, but it will help keep the crabgrass away!

5. Over-Seeding

Over-seeding can help in those areas of grass that were worn down or patchy during the winter. Laying seeds down on the grass will give it a boost to grow stronger, like a shot of vitamin C for your lawn! Keep in mind that you can’t over-seed in combination with an herbicide application against crabgrass. It is advisable to wait at least a month before spreading new seeds.

Yes, your lawn can get ‘sick’!

Lawn disease can be serious when weather and/or lawn managment favor disease development. It takes a combination and persistance of either of these two factors to create the perfect environment for disease.

Weather Condtions for Disease:

  • Warm Temperatures
  • Moist Air (Humidity)

Lawn Managment that Causes Disease:

  • Frequent, short periods of watering time
  • Watering lawn at night
  • Untimely Fertilization
  • Tatch build up
  • Not aerating the lawn
  • Letting the grass grow very long between mowing times

What can I do to prevent disease?

  1. Water your lawn less frequently (1-2 times a week) but for longer periods of time (1-2 hours)
  2. Fertilize properly and timely
  3. Keep an eye on that grass! Taking a close look at your lawn never hurts! Get down on your hands and knees and pull up a small chunk of grass. Look at its roots to make sure they are full and health. Make sure the grass leaf is bright and green.
  4. Call us! We are always happy to come take a closer look at your lawn for you if you are not sure if you have a disease. If you do have one, we have many products and services to remove and prevent future disease.

Summer Services

2. Summer Maintenance

a. Weekly Mowing / Bi Weekly Mowing

  • Peter Doran Lawn & Landscape offers both residential and commercial mowing. Our mowing service includes line trimming, edging and blowing. We trim or edge along foundation of your home or office, fence lines, trees, flower beds, sidewalks and curbs. Our powerful blowers add the finishing touch by removing debris from the hard surfaces around your home. You can be signed up for weekly mowing (getting your grass cut once a week) or bi-weekly mowing (grass cut every other week).

b. Bush and Shrub Trimming

  • Our bush and shrub trimming service is recommended to keep your yard looking beautiful throughout the year. Upon your request, we will come out to your property and trim down any and all bushes, hedges, shrubs, and trees to make them healthier and looking great.

c. Side Walk Edging

  • The edging service defines the concrete borders of your lawn and gives it a clean, manicured look. Turf overgrowth (both grass and soil) onto concrete is natural and can take away from the overall appearance of your lawn. Edging removes this overgrown turf and gives your lawn a crisp, razor sharp edge. The more often you edge, the less overgrowth there is and it also keeps your edges looking great all season.

d. Fertilization and Weed Control

  • Lawn fertilization & weed control is sometimes called “weed and feed”. Our licensed technician, Kieth, uses the safest methods to protect your property, family, pets and the environment. The result is a healthy, beautiful lawn, which resists harmful diseases and insects. We provide five fertilizer treatments throughout the growing season. These treatments supply all the necessary nutrients at the appropriate times needed to maintain a vigorous turf (nitrogen, phosphorus, & potassium). This service also includes four treatments of weed control. These treatments will control annual grassy weeds as well as all broadleaf weeds.

e. Landscaping

  • Summer is the time to get your landscaping done. We have a landscape manager, Steve, who will come out to your property and give you a free estimate for your job! Brian, Jeff, and John will then come to your property and work hard to get the job done. They will take on both small or more complex jobs:
  • Ponds & Water Features
  • Outdoor Fireplace
  • Landscape Edging
  • Decorative Rock
  • Pondless Waterfalls
  • Retaining Walls
  • Decorative Mulch
  • Landscape Bed Weeding

Spring Services

1. Spring Maintenance (April)

 a. Spring Clean-Up

  • We use Stihl back pack blowers to cleanup leaves and debris from around buildings, under decks, landscape beds, driveways and sidewalks. Our commercial mowers are equipped with vacuum collection systems and a dethatcher rake on the front. The dethatcher tines pick and pull out thatch simultaneously as the mower “vacuums” up the debris into its bagger. This cleans up all the lawn areas leaving you with a clean estate.

b. Dethatching

  • We mount a dethatcher to the front of our lawn mower. The dethatcher tines pick and pull out thatch. Simultaneously, the mower “vacuums” up the debris into its bagger. This way the mower blades are engaged. The added bonus of this method is that the lawn also gets cut and bagged.

c. Pre-emergent Fertilization

  • Lawn maintenance usually requires attentive weed control. The first application is one of the most effective ways to control weeds by applying pre-emergent herbicide. This is a chemical treatment that prevents unwanted growth from appearing.

d. Spring Gutter Cleaning

  • It’s important to keep the flow of movement in your gutters. If not properly maintained, they can create run off onto your siding and leave permanent damage or stains on your walls. Your gutters can also become moldy and rotten to the point of detaching completely from your home or business. We suggest gutter cleaning at least 2x per year, during the spring and fall usually to coordinate with the rainy season and to prevent costly repairs.

e. Core Aeration

  • Over time, the surface of your lawn can become tightly compacted and covered with dense thatch. This is a layer of dead stems and roots. When this happens, much of the food and water your lawn needs can’t penetrate the surface. Core Aeration is simply a method of punching holes into the turf to allow moisture, oxygen, and nutrients to penetrate the soil. Aeration reduces soil compaction, enhances thatch breakdown, improves water infiltration and improves response to fertilizer. This service also improves soil composition and maximizes turfgrass rooting. Most importantly, it makes the lawn less susceptible to damage from weeds, insects, drought and disease. Aeration combined with overseeding is an excellent method for an established lawn to relieve compaction and improve its density. We recommend aeration & overseeding/renovation seeding once per season to all established lawns. Peter Doran Lawn & Landscape uses top quality seed that is free of noxious weeds.

f. Overseeding

  • IF YOU HAVE NOT OVERSEEDED YOUR LAWN IN THE LAST 4 YEARS, IT NEEDS TO BE MADE AS DENSE AS BRAND NEW SOD! Overseeding is one of the most important lawn care tasks, yet few homeowners ever do it. So, you ask, if I fertilize my lawn properly, why do I need to add new seed, especially if my grass looks pretty good right now? The answer is grass is not immortal. After five or six years, grass plants will slow down their reproduction rates; they get tired just like we do as we age. Thin grass invites weeds. Thicker grass looks professionally maintained and maintains its health. Overseeding is combined with aeration. The aerator puts the holes in the grounds and the overseeding machine drops seeds over the lawn and in the holes as well.

g. Renovation Seeding (Slit Seeding)

  • Where lawn quality is unacceptable, renovation seeding may be necessary. Renovation involves planting grass seed into an existing lawn area, often adding new grass varieties to repair damage or increase tolerance to drought, shade, or wear. Renovation is for those who are serious about getting there lawn back under control!

h. Miscellanious Jobs

  • Tree trimming
  • Garden Tilling
